Martyn moved from a local government and 'City' background to management consultancy in 1988 to specialise in the public and voluntary sectors. He has become widely acknowledged as one of the most experienced housing consultants in the country.

He has carried out strategic housing reviews for over 40 local authorities, completed some 30 transfers in a  lead consultant role and carried out independent business plan  validations for another seven. More widely, Martyn has advised many local authorities and RSLs on corporate strategy, organisational development , business planning and performance improvement.

In allied fields, Martyn has been a key advisor on research and policy review studies for the regulatory bodies, lobby groups and other sector-representative bodies.

Martyn also has a keen interest in urban and community regeneration and has been a lead advisor to local authorities, RSL's , developers and masterplanners on the financial appraisal and ownership/management implications of complex mixed-tenure housing and commercial redevelopment initatives.
